Understanding P&L in crypto trading
Profit and Loss (P&L) is calculated as (sell price - buy price) × quantity. A positive result is profit, negative is loss. ROI expresses this as a percentage of your initial investment — a 50% ROI means your current value is 1.5x your cost basis.
How trading fees impact returns
Fees compound significantly over many trades. A 0.1% fee on both entry and exit means you need a 0.2% price gain just to break even. On leveraged or high-frequency trading, fees can erode a large portion of nominal gains.
Realized vs unrealized P&L
Unrealized P&L is your theoretical gain or loss if you closed the position right now. Realized P&L is what you actually locked in by selling. Only realized P&L counts for tax purposes in most jurisdictions.
